After a wild winter, it may not feel quite true – but Spring is finally here! Although it’s not quite shorts and t-shirt weather yet, hopefully we are moving in that direction. As we move towards brighter evenings, one of Edinburgh’s classic festivals isn’t too far away – and it’s an evening of fire at the Beltane Fire Festival!

On 30th April, Edinburgh’s Carlton Hill is overtaken by revellers, drums and fire as up to 12 thousand people descend on the city to participate in this ancient Celtic fertility festival.

Red hot curry

So, whether you are an Edinburgh resident, or just visiting us to unleash your primal instincts, why not put some fire in your belly with a great Indian meal. Before you brave the flames we can give you as much heat as you want with one of our classic curry dishes!

As the New Year continues and the weather improves we can start to think about getting out of the house a bit more and enjoying the wonders of our city of Edinburgh. Each month on the first Saturday here in Edinburgh’s beautiful Morningside, the Colmcille Centre is the venue for the Morningside Maker’s Market. Free to enter and with gentle music in the air the market is an opportunity to find a wide range of artisan gifts from all over Scotland. Often selling their own wares, the market brings together some of the most skilled artists, crafters and designers from across the country

Curry Crafter

The market runs from 11am to 4pm so after spending time strolling around and finding some unique items and gifts, we have one further craftsman we recommend you take the time to visit. Here at the Clay Oven Indian Restaurant and Takeaway our chef is applying his finely honed skills to creating great food. To complete your day of culture – pop in for anything from a light curried lunch to a full banquet.

Maybe Scotland’s first couple of matches in this season’s Six Nations haven’t quite given us the results that we may have hoped for – but with 3 games to go, and two of them at nearby Murrayfield Stadium there is every reason to stay positive!

The next game is on the 27th of February against Ireland at Murrayfield. If you are lucky enough to have a ticket, book a table for after the match to come and enjoy a hearty meal before heading out on the town to (hopefully) celebrate a famous win. We’re within walking distance (although a little bit up hill) from the stadium so you’ll be able to build up a good appetite on your way. Alternatively order some of our great Indian food to takeaway or be delivered and enjoy at home.

Colin Firth stars in our film of the month for January – the already greatly acclaimed “The King’s Speech”. Set in the 1930s where better to see this film than in the historically grand surroundings of the nearby Dominion Cinema. This is one to make you feel good – and then how about relaxing afterwards with the king of foods – a great curry.

Celebrate the King (Prawn)

To celebrate this great movie – we recommend you enjoy our Tandoori Raj Chingree. Chingree means king prawn – and whilst these ones aren’t having their stutters cured they are being marinated in a carefully spiced lemon and yoghurt sauce before being grilled to add a fantastic charcoal taste. Order these with some great Indian flatbreads and get eating – delicious.

This festive period the Churchill Theatre are presenting the festive favourite “A Christmas Carol” – but with a twist. This version is the award winning version of the play written by Tom Mula, retelling the tale from the point of view of Jacob Marley – one of the three ghosts sent to redeem Ebeneezer Scrooge. By telling the story from the perspective of Scrooge’s business partner allows the cast to provide the audience with a humorous tale whilst still retaining the important celebratory themes of Dickens’ original work.

The play is written to be performed by a small cast of only 4 actors and the unique twist should present plenty of opportunity for you and your friends to deliberate over whether this betters the original or not.

So – why not show your friends you’re no scrooge by treating them to a fantastic Indian meal at the Clay Oven Indian Restaurant – close enough that Jacob Marley could trudge there in all his chains and shackles and enjoy a great curry and naan!

Our film of the month is based on the popular Edinburgh story of Burke and Hare. Based on a true story of grave robbing, this film stars Simon Pegg and Andy Serkis as well as Isla Fisher (most famously Shannon Reid from Home and Away a few years ago or more recently married to Sacha Baron Cohen as they combine to give this story a light hearted twist.

A Curried History

Historically, one of the origins of currying of food was to preserve meat ahead of long journeys. Given plans to enjoy a light hearted film about grave robbing, how about coupling the evening up to perfection and enjoying the most beautiful marinated meats and dishes that we can serve in our Morningside based Indian Restaurant and takeaway? After all – this is hardly a film you are going to be taking your mother along to!

One of our newer neighbours here in Edinburgh’s Morningside is the Persian Rug Village. Like it’s sister store in London the Persian Rug Village is the premier place to find hand crafted rugs and gifts. From its base in Turkey only the finest and most elegant rugs are brought to the UK to delight their UK customers. Their skilled staff also make them the perfect choice should you have any repairs required to your rugs. Finally, if there is a specific design you really want – they can make it to please you!

Curry on a Rug?

So, you may wonder why we’re telling you about a rug shop. Well – for our curry loving customers we believe they offer three important services. Firstly, you can choose a nice rug for your home to keep your toes cosy whilst you enjoy our Indian delicacies. Secondly, they can repair any rugs you may have – in case you have spilt some rich curry sauce on them. Finally, they can create a rug in any motif you like – for a curry fan like us this is perfect – I think I’m getting a picture of a nice Prawn Puri.

Held on the first Saturday of every month at the Columcille Centre – within walking distance of our Indian Restaurant this is a perfect opportunity to find some unique gifts and bits and bobs for around the house.

Not a Curry Maker’s Market

We won’t be there exhibiting our fantastic range of authentic curries cooked from the finest local ingredients – but there will be lots of local artists showing their wares – so get yourself along and pick up something that little bit different. And just maybe pop along before for an Indian Lunch or after for an Indian Dinner!

Our movie of the month is really the movie of next month – as it’s not out until the 1st of October! We’re getting excited about it now – the reason being that if you’re old enough to remember it first time round you’ll probably need to start planning babysitters. If you didn’t catch it first time around – trust us – it’s worth doing. The film we’re talking about is the time travel classic “Back to the Future” – Michael J Fox’s finest moment and a film that is impossible not to enjoy.

So how about a night out with a classic film from 1985 and then perfect renditions of dishes that became popular in the UK in the 70s here at the Clay Oven Indian Restaurant? Given that summer is definitely gone – the walk from here to the Dominion is short enough that you should escape the rain!

There are some films where the cast list just piques your interest – whether for good reasons – or bad! The Expendables has to be just that sort of film – a cast list of ‘greats’ from the 90s and a few names from more recent times. Whether that appeals or not – it’s getting good reviews and has to be a good bet for a mindless night out with a group of friends at our local Dominion cinema.

Indian Meat Treats

So – after an evening of questionable culture – pop along to see us . There is only one dish that we can recommend – and that is the pure meat delight of our Tandoori Mixed Grill!
