A Tribute to the Biryani

In July last year, our Featured Dish was the great Chicken Tikka Biryani – and since then we’ve seen more of you order it and love it. For those of you who missed it, we’re going to take a step back and celebrate this king of Indian dishes all over again!

It’s difficult to know what is the best feature of this meal is. A biryani includes rice cooked with the meat of your choice and a vegetable curry spiced to your own specification. Should we celebrate the value for money – after all it is a meal in one? Should we celebrate the fantastic flavour created by the unique method of coming the meat and rice together? Or should we just celebrate the fact that this is an incredible dish and tell you to go and enjoy it!

A personal preference is to go for lamb as your choice of meat – our tender cooked lamb complements the dish to perfection – and then for a nice and spicy accompanying curry – after all – it is you who controls how much you have to have in each mouthful!

Film of the Month – Black Swan

Our film of the month for February is the fantastic Black Swan – yes, we know it’s been out a while but we had to recommend The King’s Speech last month! This is the type of film the atmospheric Dominion does better than any type of cinema. An intense film focusing around a production of Swan Lake and with a director with a reputation for obscurity – this is one that begs to be digested over a meal with your fellow movie goers!

Conversational Curry

Following a film like this we’d recommend starting any meal with a few Popadums, you can use big shards to help get your point across. After that – a curry with some spice to reflect the film and some fresh boiled basmati rice to let you mould your own white swan on your plate! Finally – if you haven’t managed to get your thoughts on the film across – order two naans and become a swan yourself.

Brilliant Bread

One of the greatest things about true Indian food is the nan bread. Fluffy, flavoursome and just perfect for dipping into your curry – and impossible to recreate at home. Here are three lovely breads – two very special nans and one other that you really have to try.

Sultana Nan

Also known as a Peshwari Nan – this bready treat is something special. Stuffed with sweet sultanas and ground almonds this bread is perfect with any curry – and equally as good dipped into cool yoghurt as a dessert!

Keema Nan

One for you meat lovers. Think the Sultana Nan, but replace the filling with spiced meat and you have the Keema Nan. A slightly heavier bread (not surprisingly given it is stuffed with meat) – but fantastic – and one to top off a good meaty dish.

Stuffed Paratha

Whilst the nan is cooked in the tandoor, a paratha is a fried whole wheat bread. Our Stuffed Paratha is filled with lovely vegetables. The paratha is slightly crispier and lighter than the full doughy nan – and is perfect for making parcels around your favourite curry.

Featured Dish – Chana Massallam

What can we say about this dish – it’s like a vegetarian picnic. Chick peas, lentils and egg are combined with a range of herbs and spices and the distinct taste of fresh coriander.

Featured Dish – Panir Pasanda

This is as smooth as can be. We home make our Indian Panir Cheese and marinate it to imbue it with flavour. This delicately flavoured cheese is then cooked in a mild and creamy sauce rich with almonds.

Featured Dish – Sabzi Sambar

This dish may sound South American – it isn’t but the spices will certainly be dancing on your tongue! With a wide variety of mixed vegetables and some pulsing lentils this dish is finished off with a lovely spicy hot sauce – perfect.
