Clay Oven’s Balti Dinner

Maybe we should rename our our Balti Dinner as the brilliant balti dinner. This set menu for one is something we are very proud of – and is a great celebration of everything that is great about Indian cooking. Including a starter, an incredible main as well as a full complement of rice and bread dishes there is nothing here you won’t relish.

The meal kicks off with a lightly battered vegetarian starter of pakora – freshly cooked and served with some nice sharp lemon to squeeze on top. From there – we will bring forth the balti – a rich dish of beautiful curry with freshly barbecued chicken or lamb – just tell us which and how spicy. Served with this is a plate of classic pilau rice and a super fluffy naan.

A beautiful dinner – and all for only £12.95 – perfect.

Featured Dish – Madras

This dish is named after the southern Indian city of Madras. Although Madras is now known as Chennai – this dish has maintained its traditional name and reputation and is one to try. Notoriously spicy, this is a dish that combines the sharpness of lemon juice, the intense flavour of garlic and the heat of chilli to perfection.

Our recommendation is the classic ‘Chicken Madras’ – perfect on top of a mountain of pilau rice and just begging for a glass or two or our great Indian lagers to tame the heat.

Featured Dish – Dansak

Traditionally the Dansak is a lamb based curry (though chicken is pictured!) – and there is little question that tender lamb works perfectly with the mixture of rich lentils, ginger, garlic, cumin and other herbs and spices that make up this classic dish. The lentils give the sauce a thickness that makes this ideal for eating with chapattis and no cutlery – and the mix of flavours create a spicy yet pleasant meal. Our recommendation for this month is go classic with the lamb and enjoy with a mountain of chapattis.

Featured Dishes – March

Our two dishes for March are two dishes that regular Curry fans will recognise – the Dansak and the Madras. These are two stars of the classics section of our menu and can be enjoyed with meat, vegetables or prawns depending on your preference.

Super Side Dishes

It’s time to celebrate some of the less acknowledged, but equally fantastic dishes that will bring any meal to life. Whether they are dining in our Edinburgh Restaurant of enjoying one of our takeaway or delivery meals we are frequently asked the same question – what is a great side dish. Sag Aloo seems the classic – but here’s a couple we recommend you don’t overlook.

Brinzal Bhuna

Aubergine – the ultimate spongy vegetable. Not only that – but its texture is perfect for absorbing great flavour like the subtle spice mix in this delightful side.

Mushroom Bhaji

Like the aubergines – well cooked mushrooms seem designed to absorb flavour. For our mushroom bhaji these are the tingling flavours that only fresh herbs can create – a delight all the way!

Featured Dish – Rogan Josh

A curry whose name literally translates as hot oil – we reckon that the name alone may make up many peoples minds! This is undeniably another dish with heat – and including pimentos amongst the ingredients guarantees a certain piquancy! This is a classic chicken or lamb dish – and one to delight – with the rich spicy gravy complementing the tender meat. Order a mountain of bread of your choice – you’re going to enjoy this one so much your bowl will be wiped clean!

Featured Dish – Jhal Bhuna

A jewel amongst our curries. You can choose whether you want chicken, lamb, prawn or king prawn with this spicy curry. Don’t worry – it’s not too hot but it is a great way to dip your toe in the spicy food sea! With rich flavours created by onion, herbs and tomatoes the spices complement this dish whilst ensuring that you will leave the restaurant with a slight glow! Our recommendation is to enjoy this with chicken and served with a mountain of rice – a real winter warmer.

Featured Dishes – February

Hot Dishes for February

This month’s Featured Dishes are a couple of warmers. This cold winter seems reluctant to release it’s grasp on Edinburgh – so anything to keep up warm just has to be appreciated! Here are a couple of dishes that will help put the hairs back on your chest (if that is what you are after!)

Scotland in the 6 Nations Rugby

Maybe Scotland’s first couple of matches in this season’s Six Nations haven’t quite given us the results that we may have hoped for – but with 3 games to go, and two of them at nearby Murrayfield Stadium there is every reason to stay positive!

The next game is on the 27th of February against Ireland at Murrayfield. If you are lucky enough to have a ticket, book a table for after the match to come and enjoy a hearty meal before heading out on the town to (hopefully) celebrate a famous win. We’re within walking distance (although a little bit up hill) from the stadium so you’ll be able to build up a good appetite on your way. Alternatively order some of our great Indian food to takeaway or be delivered and enjoy at home.
